About

The first aviation activities in our country began in 1912 in Sefaköy, near today's Atatürk Airport, with two hangars and a small airfield. Adopting M. Kemal Atatürk's words, "THE FUTURE IS IN THE SKIES," which also guided the country's future, the Turkish Aviation Society was founded in 1925 and later renamed the Turkish Aeronautical Association, laying the institutional foundations for Turkish Civil Aviation.

The first civil air transport was launched in 1933 with a small fleet of five aircraft under the name "Turkish Air Mail." In the 10th year of our Republic, the "State Airline Administration," established under the Ministry of National Defense, was tasked with establishing civil air routes and providing transportation in Turkey. In response to the rapid development of global civil aviation and major technological advances, the "Civil Aviation Department," established within the Ministry of Transportation in 1954 to protect national interests and ensure the orderly conduct and supervision of international relations, was reorganized in 1987 as the "General Directorate of Civil Aviation" in line with the conditions of the day. Until November 18, 2005, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation was the main service unit of the Ministry of Transportation. On that date, Law No. 5431 on the Organization and Duties of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation came into force, granting it financial autonomy and establishing its current management structure.

Today, aviation activities in our country are carried out within the framework of the Turkish Civil Aviation Law No. 2920 and the Administrative and Technical Regulations and Aviation Instructions published within this scope. In the aviation industry

, which requires advanced technology and has no boundaries, our country has become a member of various international organizations in order to closely follow international aviation developments and meet the requirements of the era. Our country became a party to the "Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation," which forms the basis of international civil aviation, in 1945 and is among the founding members of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Furthermore, in the European region, our country, which was a founding member of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) in 1956, is also a member of the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL). Additionally, our country, which is a member of various organizations at the regional level, resolutely continues its aviation activities in accordance with national and international legislation.
